regarding investment by non-citizens in Tourism and Tourism
related activities
Abstract
Our current policy regarding foreign investment in the tourism
industry is as follows:
Hotel
Sector
The restriction of 49% for foreign participation in hotels with
less than 100 rooms being waived. There will be no restriction
in foreign participation in hotels with less than 100 rooms
provided that the project proposal meets our objectives of
quality tourism and brings added value to the existing project.
Restaurant
The minimum investment of Rs 10M from non-citizens in a
restaurant project is being waived. Proposals will be approved
on its own merits.
Tour
Operator and Travel Agency Services
Foreign investment is allowed in Tour Operator and Travel Agency
services following Cabinet approval on 05 August 2005, subject
to :
(a) rental
of contract cars business being reserved only for Mauritian nationals;
(b) project
value being a minimum of Rs 5 M, except for tour operators
operating in niche markets; and
(c) the
minimum employment criteria being established.
Pleasure Craft Activities
Restriction on pleasure craft is being maintained due to high
congestion. Foreign participation is allowed only if minimum
investment is at least Rs 10 M and approval is obtained from the
Ministry of Tourism, Leisure and External Communications.
Diving
Centres
Restriction on diving centres is being maintained to give
opportunities to Mauritian nationals.
