CITE ST LUC, FOREST SIDE – POLLUTION

(No. B/258) Mr M. Dowarkasing (Third Member for Curepipe and Midlands) asked the Minister of Environment and National Development Unit whether, in regard to air, noise and other forms of pollution prevailing in Citι St Luc, Forest Side, and emanating from the Consolidated Ltd., Ferney Spinning Mills, he will state if copy of the reports of the studies carried out by his Ministry will be tabled.

Mr Bachoo:  Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, the answer is in the affirmative.

LA TOUR KOENIG - COMPAGNIE MAURICIENNE DE TEXTILE LTEE - POLLUTION

(No. B/827) Mrs A. Navarre-Marie (First Member for GRNW and Port Louis West) asked the Minister of Environment and National Development Unit whether he will state if he has recently received representations from the residents of La Tourelle, La Tour Koenig, regarding pollution emanating from the Compagnie Mauricienne de Textile Ltιe., and if so, the remedial measures that have been taken, if any.

Reply:  Representations were made to my Ministry regarding dust pollution on 26 June.

After investigation, the company confirmed the emission of black smoke due to a broken air filter in one of its boilers.  The filter was changed within hours and the boiler re-started in normal running condition.

The situation is being monitored and no complaint has been received since then.

POLLUTION – AIR QUALITY – MONITORING

(No. B/1023) Mr Y. Varma (First Member for Mahebourg and Plaine Magnien) asked the Minister of Environment and National Development Unit whether, in regard to pollution, he will state if a monitoring of the air across the country is carried out and, if so, indicate –

(a)              the places, and

(b)              the frequency and, if not, if he considers it advisable that needful be done.

Reply: Monitoring of air quality has been carried out in various regions such as Cassis, Valentina, Forest Side, Rose-Belle, Saint Antoine, GRNW, Flacq, Port Louis North and Place Margeot.  Results obtained so far have shown that the ambient air quality standards are being satisfied.

The mobile station is subject to frequent break downs and my Ministry is, therefore, in the process of procuring specialised units of equipment for the measurement of important parameters separately.

A new equipment known as the Gent Sampler has been provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is being used to measure fine particulate matter.

POINTE AUX CAVES - COAL FIRED POWER PLANT

(No. B/1264) Mrs S. Grenade (Second Member for GRNW and Port Louis West) asked the Minister of Environment and National Development Unit whether, in regard to the construction of a coal fired power plant at Pointe aux Caves, he will state if the Environment Impact Assessment has already been granted to CT Power and, if not, why not.

Reply:  The reply is no, as the application is still being processed.
