Environment Protection Fee
Brief
The
Environment Protection (Amendment of Schedule) Regulations
2008 have been promulgated in the Government Gazette No. 37 of
19 April 2008 in connection with the Environment Protection
Fee (EPF).
The
objective of the EPF is to raise fund for the promotion of
local environmental initiatives aimed at preventing and
reducing pollution. The revenue collected is being credited to
the Consolidated Fund of the Government.
The base for application of the EPF has been
extended, through the above new regulations made under the
EPA, to include the following new items:
(i)
mobile phones (Rs 50 per unit)
(ii)
batteries for vehicles (Rs 50 per unit)
(iii)
pneumatic tyres (Rs 50 per unit)
(iv)
a new tariff structure of 0.85% turnover instead of
0.75% turnover for hotels, guest houses and tourist residences
The above regulations have come into operation on 01
May 2008 and are applicable to:
o
Hotels,
guesthouses and tourist residences irrespective of the number
of rooms
o
Stone
crushing plants and manufacture or processing of aggregates,
concrete blocks, pre-cast units
o
Importers
of mobile phones
o
Importers
of batteries for motor vehicles1
o
Importers
of pneumatic tyres meant for all vehicles2
The fee shall be payable at the point of entry
in the country for the above items that are imported.
